This short sequence is to be created from a few small word prompts, I picked out 'mushroom', 'powerful', and 'slapstick', I will probably only create my sequence from the first two as I feel that timing has to be done very well to achieve successful slapstick humour. I started out by sketching whatever came to mind, which began with mushrooms being characters.
I moved on from this concept to mushroom being a major part of the setting, I thought about bioluminescence in fungi like the Mycena chlorophos, which glow a bright green in the dark. I thought that this could be a great way to explore colour in my work as well as lighting. I've always loved fantasy and sci-fi so a setting composed of large glowing mushrooms appealed to me as it felt magical and adventurous. I then produced a rough digital piece exploring what the visuals could be like in Photoshop. I'm quite happy with the result but don't know how it would be to animate the lighting alongside the character's movement. I am also not entirely sure what the storyline or narrative would be behind this piece yet.
The photos above show the sort of images I had in mind when I thought of this idea, and the photos from my sketchbook below them show my initial thoughts. I thought it would be fun to make them bigger having them make a more powerful impression on the landscape. I found the little huts outside of this project when looking into recreations of the Neolithic settlement at Durrington Walls, the roofs are almost mushroom shaped themselves. To the right is a page of my sketchbook made with colouring pencils, developing the sketches from before further, and thinking about what sort of characters would live within this setting.
I made two versions of my rough digital sketch, one with added glowing particles and one without, I have included both here:
I could develop this into an atmosphere piece, so rather than have it based on narrative have it based on creating a small world for the audience to step into alongside the characters that live there. This could open up into looking for some interesting sounds to make soundscapes of the different parts explored, as well as forming the sort of culture that would like in caves filled with glowing mushrooms.
I then went on to drawing from music, considering how I could make a story within the melody and how I could incorporate my prompts. I made a small playlist of songs I thought were hopeful and developed upon my ideas through sketches and some digital tests. The following idea I developed from was the sketch of the well and the mine, the concept being that a business man's commute to work or his elevator ride down to his office was underground, with the interior of the well becoming more and more industrious as he progresses further down. I'd want the animals and workers to move to a similar rhythm to the music, which would give me a chance to improve upon my timing from the last short sequence I made.
I made this test very quickly so it's not particularly detailed or considered, so the scale between the man in the 'lift' and the workers around him is not consistent and I didn't put time into adding the foreground on its own layer. The only movement is that of the camera scrolling down and the well going with it. Despite this the above video does give a general idea of what I'm going for and gave me an insight to whether it would work outside of my mind or not.
