I created three walk cycles for this part of the project, all based on the method of Richard Williams in The Animator's Survival Kit.
Attempt One:
My first attempt was a simple figure without clothes or features walking across the screen, I followed Richard William's steps exactly so I captured the correct movements. I think that it is successful in portraying a walk cycle, but is probably too fast for most walks, and if this were a character in the context of a story they would have to be determined in their end location.
Attempt 2:
My second attempt was based on an observational drawing I had made of a woman in the meadows with her dog. I kept to the same leg positioning per frame as the previous walk cycle so it still looks quite quick, but she wears a big coat and it could be excused as her trying to get out of the cold. I like that there's more evident character in her due to the extra details.
I also filmed the cycle with the sheets of paper positioned so that she was in the centre of the frame, creating a loop of the walk.
Attempt 3:
This walk cycle was based on the previous cycle but I wanted to try a different medium. I haven't experimented with any under the camera methods and wanted to produce something more tactile, so decided to start with simple cut-outs. I coloured in sheets of paper with the different colours I wanted to create a nice texture and then layered them up under the camera with blu-tack to create a visible distance between the pieces and would press all the pieces down with a sheet of PVC when taking each photograph. I'm pleased with how it came out and would be interested in using this style again but in a more complex way, perhaps making a background with these textures could be effective.
